Wire tapping

If the cable is broken, as well as in other cases, you need to determine which wires are connected to the headphones, microphone and control buttons.

There are certain standards for wire colors that manufacturers adhere to, although they can be violated:

  • Colorless (copper) - common wire;
  • red - right channel;
  • green - left channel;
  • blue - microphone;
  • other colors - control panel (buttons, or "swing").

Depending on the model, the wires to the microphone and control panel may be combined or separate, and there may be one or more common wire in different headphone elements. A shielded wire may go to the microphone.

Wires going to different parts of the headphones can be tested with a tester. First of all you need to find those going to the speakers:

  • Strip all wire ends. In some models, the wire going to the microphone is shielded, where the screen plays the role of one of the wires.
  • Put on headphones. There will be a crackling sound in the speakers when you connect them to the tester. If it is only in one speaker, the tester is connected to one of the channels and the common wire. If crackling is heard in both speakers, the tester is connected to two channels, without a common wire.

Further options are possible:

  • With four wires in the cable, the remaining one is connected to the microphone and control panel.
  • With five wires, if the remaining two are wired together and not wired to the speakers, they are connected to the microphone along with the control panel and the common terminal. If the remaining two wires are connected to each other, they are soldered together, to the microphone terminal.
  • With seven wires, the remaining four are connected in pairs to the microphone and buttons. They are soldered by color, to the common and the microphone terminal.

The most common plug is a jack (mini-jack) 3.5. But apart from it are used jack 2.5, as well as miniUSB and mikroUSB.

Pinout wires on the jack 2.5 and 3.5

The cable of conventional headphones has only three wires. A plug with this number of leads is also called a TRS. The numbering goes from the tip to the cable:

1 - left channel;

2 - right channel;

3 - common.

Instead of three wires there can be four (two pairs). In this case, one wire from each pair of the same color is considered common and soldered together.

The soldering of wires on such a plug is very simple - the nearest to the cable contact ring is common, the remaining ones are right and left channels. In the standard soldering, the right channel is connected to the middle ring, and the left channel - to the end of the plug.

The wires are soldered to the appropriate solder locations. You can identify them visually or with a tester.

The 2.5 plug is arranged similarly to the 3.5 plug and does not differ from it other than in size. The soldering of the wires is the same on both plugs.

The pin assignment of wires in the miniUSB and miniUSB plugs

In some models of cell phones headphones with microphone are connected via mini- and mikroUSB connectors. But to these connectors you can connect and just headphones, for example, to use this cell phone as an MP3-player.

The pinout in these connectors is the same. There are five pins to which the wires are soldered. They are numbered from left to right when viewed from the wire connection side, and the wires are soldered to 1 (common), 3 (right channel) and 4 (left channel).

Wires soldering in a headset - headphones with microphone

In addition to conventional headphones, which only have speakers, there are headphones with a built-in microphone and control buttons. The cable of such devices has a large number of wires - from four to seven.

Such plugs have the technical name TRRS. There are two variants of soldering wires in these devices OMTP and CTIA. They differ in the connection of the microphone and the common wire, which are connected to the 3 and 4 wires.

With the wrong type connected, the microphone will not work and the sound will be muffled.

Connecting a headset to mikro- and miniUSB plugs

USB micro

In some phones the headphones are not connected to the 3.5 plug, but to the mikro- or miniUSB connector. There is also a standard when connecting to the pins of such plugs. They are counted from left to right when viewed from the wire connection side:

1. common wire;

2. microphone as well as control buttons;

3. right channel;

4. left channel;

5. not connected.

If you have headphones, the plug of which does not fit to the machine, you can make an adapter.

This requires:

  • A plug that can be plugged into the unit;
  • A "mother" connector, in which the headphones are plugged in;
  • A piece of three- or four-core cable to connect the plug and the socket.

Information! You can use the cable from the unwanted mouse or keyboard.

The procedure is as follows:

1. Cut off a piece of cable 10 cm long;

2. Cut it on both sides to a length of 15 mm;

3. Strip wire ends at 5mm;

4. tin the stripped ends;

5. tin the leads of the plug and the connector;

6. put on the cable the non-disassembled parts of the connector;

7. solder the wires to the connector;

8. write down the wires soldering;

9. depending on the connector design, fix the cable inside with a clamp or by tying a knot on it;

10. assemble the design;

11. repeat steps 6-10 for the plug, soldering the wires according to its soldering.

Important: Only neutral flux can be used for soldering. Acid will destroy the wire or cause a short in the plug.

Instead of split 3.5 plug you can take a non-split, with a piece of cable of the required length. This will not work with USB connectors - different outputs are used to connect the headphones and computer.

In addition to the standard connectors there are plugs used only in certain models of phones. These are the 10-pin and 20-pin connectors of Samsung phones and some others. Headphone pinouts for these models can be found on the Internet.
